The Key Elements of Modern Interior Design

Modern Interior Designer in Charlotte, NCSmooth surfaces and clean lines without intricate details characterize modern interior design. But this doesn’t mean your office or home will look cold or stark because the days of eccentric decorating and boxy furniture are long gone. Contemporary design today is a blend of livable, comfortable elements that deliver a fresh, sophisticated look and feel.

To create this, you’ll need to incorporate 3 key elements: lighting, texture and color.

  1. Lighting: There is a multitude of choices that provide clean, interesting lines to accent modern interior design. Popular fixtures include floor lamps, pendants, and track lighting.
  2. Texture: To create a more inviting, natural setting, and to add texture, use fabrics like wool, linen, crushed velvet or silk. Accents such as area rugs, over-stuffed pillows, furniture upholstery, and window treatments are a great way to offset smooth, clean lines of metal accents. When selecting fabrics, avoid elaborate patterns because they can distort the look you’re trying to achieve.
  3. Color: Typically, modern interior design is offset by neutral colors. You can spice up a room by painting one of the walls in an accent color, or add small, vivid accessories or a boldly colored sofa. A word of caution about accessorizing: don’t clutter the space because simplicity is the key to contemporary design.
